a5c7b9f00b On July 2nd, satellite stations experience interference in their systems and the scientists and military believe that it is caused by meteors. Soon they realize that it is originated from the Moon by a huge spacecraft that brings other ones that are positioned over the major cities on Earth including Washington, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London, Houston and Moscow. World governments do not know the purpose of the alien force. The scientist David Levinson discovers that the aliens are preparing the invasion of Earth, destroying the human species, and he succeeds in reporting to the President of the United States, Thomas J. Whitmore. With an inferior technology, Whitmore and General William Grey decide to give a chance to Levinson's plan of downloading a virus in the computer of the alien spacecraftthe last chance of Earthlings to survive.
The ultimate encounter when mysterious and powerful aliens launch an all out invasion against the human race. The spectacle begins when massive spaceships appear in Earth's skies. But wonder turns to terrorthe ships blast destructive beams of fire down on cities all over the planet. Now the world's only hope lies with a determined band of survivors, uniting for one last strike against the invaders - before it's the end of mankind.
**Possible spoilers** A significant number of the comments already posted here say quite defensively that this movie isn't meant to be Shakespeare, that it's just a Big Dumb Action Flick (hereinafter BDAF), that, in effect, if you just stop thinking, this is a really fantastic movie that showcases all-American values, goddamnit.

If you want to see a BDAF, though, there are so many that are done so much better… and ID4 steals from most of them. And if you want to showcase American values, there are so many that are so much better than segregation. Yeah, the Dynamic Duo here is half Will Smith (and describing the plot sounds like the setup for a bad joke: "A Jew and a black guy walk into a spaceship…"), but the love stories – a massive weak point, and that's saying something, because this baby is rife with weak points – are neatly segregated: Will Smith with Vivica Fox, Jeff Goldblum with the red-haired shiksa. There was no way we were going to get a "Space Monsters' Ball" scenario with Fox playing the careerist ex-wife and what's-her-name playing the stripper. (The Hispanic kids only get screen time at all because their dad is Randy Quaid.) A white guy entertains Smith by making fun of Jesse Jackson (mercifully, the character bites it shortly after), and there is a tasteless joke about violent Los Angelenos; on what planet is that supposed to be funny?

When I watch a BDAF, I expect certain things from it, and one of those is good directorial judgment about which characters get screen time. In a BDAF about aliens, we paid good money (actually, I watched this on cable, but you take my point) to SEE THE FRICKIN' ALIENS. The ones that get the most time on screen are dead! The only live one we see (other than the incredibly stupid ones in the mothership) gets punched in the head, then awakens conveniently right in the middle of an autopsy at Area 51 (of course), where Brent Spiner reveals that these guys don't look like Alien-Predator hybrids at all; the Alien-Predator thingo is just a "bio-mechanical suit" (H.R. Giger would cry) covering up a much more boring alien inside. Actually, Spiner's brief performance was the one thing about the film I can say without reservation I liked. After all, geeks have spent many years dressing up and pretending to be Spiner; it's only fair that Spiner should return the favor by dressing upa geek. (Question: If the alien is communicating by resonating the late Dr. Okun's throat, where is the deep, booming voice coming from? Dr. Okun doesn't sound like that alive… oh, never mind.)

I'd also like a BDAF to be a bit less, well, homogenized. Even the dog that outruns the tunnel fire is the most boring and domestic breed in existence: the yellow Lab, a staple of minivan and SUV commercials. Bill Pullman is suitably bland, if too young and brain-dead for the part. Even the Token Gay is played by the safest, cuddliest gay guy in US entertainment: Harvey Fierstein, who has been assimilated by the mainstream-culture Borg in much the same waySmith himself.

Throw in a bit of product placement for Coke and Apple (although the laptop does appear to be running a very specialized Linux interface, one with helpful dialogs like "Uploading Virus"), and you've got a completely forgettable movie. At least, I hope to heck it's forgettable. I would hate it if my brain actually bothered to store this.

Of the many things wrong with this movie, though, perhaps the most disturbing on a bent-reality level is how much Jeff Goldblum, in rumpled hair and nerd glasses, resembles a young Allen Ginsberg. That's just wrong. In the ex-wife relationship-confrontation scene, I expected him to burst out earnestly with, "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked" etc. It couldn't possibly be sillier than the actual dialogue.
Some latest American films remind me of big `burger'-like sandwiches: too many things amassed in them, no traces of taste and a question `how can anyone eat and even swallow such a big piece of…?' Well, to be honest, ID is definitely not the worst film of the decade, and even of the year… and it's a good evolution for Mr.Emmerich after Moon 44 and Universal Soldier-like second rate flicks (some say his debut was the best film of his career, unfortunately, I have not seen it). But this cannot justify the immense success of the film. The thing is that the director has calculated the formula of success with American audience (patriotism + freedom + democracy + lots of special effects + couple of stars + little work for viewers brain + simple and predictable story so that the audience feels happy that it can foresee the next move of the plot=lots of money=good film; if you add to this science fiction elements it may become a super blockbuster, if you add a couple of serious problems and exclude aliens you may even get an Oscar nomination ) and if the film is blockbuster in USA it almost always earns a good money in the rest of the world, but than, this is not art, not even entertainment, its just an arithmetic.

Now about the film itself. This is not a science fiction. Some other term should be invented for the film like this, because it sounds almost ridiculous, OK, I see fiction, but where the hell is science? Real science fiction books or films use some invented or fantastic world to show some all human problems, this doesn't mean that all SFi films should beseriousfilms of Tarkovsky or Kubrick, but Independence Day goes beyond all imaginable limits of cliché melodrama, cheap action film and hurrah-patriotic propaganda (when watching ID sometimes I even suspected that German Emmerich mocks at excessive patriotic feelings of some Americans – his last film `Patriot' goes even farther in this nationalistic fields of glory-but if this is a satire it is a very subtle one and most people take the `God bless America, land that I love…' part of the film rather seriously). Of course, some may say `the film is what it is - pure entertainment, want serious themes? go, watch Fellini', partly it's right, and entertaining side of the film is not that bad (effects are good, the first part – `the chess game' till the `checkmate' is rather engrossing and I may say that on the level of the entertainment I liked it, than, especially after air plane attack scene, goes blah-blah-blah). When I watch a film like this I often ask myself wouldn't it still be a blockbuster if the storylines were better developed, dialogs were wiser, characters were not that schematic? Ok maybe you earn a couple millions more in USA if you make the American president to save the universe, but what we, non-Americans done to deserve such a torture? I think its mainly fault of critics and ordinary viewers. The first should have burned such film for its bad taste and low level, the audience should demonstrate that of course it likes entertainment but it doesn't mean that entertaining film should be stupid and flat. But the main problem is that Americans themselves are obsessed in finding `messages' in the films. So, what is the message of this one?

AMERICA IS THE SAVIOR OF THE WORLD, it saved the world from feudalism (`The Patriot'), and communism (there are more films on this subject than I can remember) , now it saves us from all possible enemies from Islamic terrorists to Godzila (by the way, it may shock some, but I LIKED GODZILLA, at least there was not that much flag waving and it seemed to be more pure entertainment than pro-American and pro-militaristic propaganda). If the ID stayed within the limits of `Martians attack' and disaster films, it would be pretty acceptable but here all these is mixed with enormous dosage of `America, America, God shed his grace on thee' and `Rembo-Rocky-A Few Good Man-stand up and fight' turns. The resulting salad is almost unbearable.
Like 2001, Star Wars and Jurassic Park, it ups the special effects stakes and gets closer to putting on screen the images you've had in your mind while reading epic sci-fi.
While huge alien spacecraft hover over the earth's major cities, the world population watches in fear and wonder. It turns to just fear when the alien force begins to attack and their definses prove to be impenetrable, forcing ex-fighter pilot Thomas Whitmore (Bill Pullman), now President of the United States, along with U. S. Marine Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith), ex-scientist turned cable technician David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum), and crop duster with a drinking problem Russell Casse (Randy Quaid) to engage in a daring counterattack in hopes of saving humanity. Independence Day is based on a screenplay written by American screenwriter Dean Devlin and German film maker Roland Emmerich (who also directed). The idea for the film is said to come from a question asking Emmerich and Devlin, who were in Europe promoting their film Stargate (1994) (1994), whether they believed in aliens. Emmerich stated that he was fascinated by the idea of an alien arrival, and further explained his response by asking the reporter to imagine what it would be like to wake up one morning and discover 15-mile-wide spaceships hovering over the world's largest cities. Emmerich then turned to Devlin and said, "I think I have an idea for our next film." A sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), is due for release in 2016, and Independence Day 3 has been announced, but no release date has been set. The story takes place over the U.S.'s independence holiday, beginning on July 2nd when the aliens first arrive, moving through July 3rd when they begin destroying the world's major cities, and ending in the counterattack on the actual Independence Day, July 4th. The implication is that the U.S.'s independence day has now become the world's Independence Day because of all the world's countries banding together to defend the existence of humanity against alien invaders. David came to realize that, just like the the aliens' use of our satellites to transmit signals to their attack force, he could plant a computer virus in the mothership that would disrupt their shields and filter down to the corresponding ships, making them all vulnerable to attack. It was considered daring because it required Steve, along with David, to fly and dock the Roswell craft in the mothership approaching Area 51, download the virus, plant a nuclear bomb with a 30-second time delay, and escape from the mothership before the explosion occurred. The beam probably hadn't reached full strength by that point. If you watch the scene of the White House's destruction, the beam does start causing damage before the big blast travels down and blows up the structure—you can clearly see fires erupting in the White House before the big blast. However, given that David had uploaded the virus to the Mother Ship, and it had infected the saucers enough to launch the attack, the saucer that Casse destroys could have been set enough in disarray that the beam wasn't up to full power. That gave Casse enough time to perform his kamikaze maneuver. In an action film suchthis, anything is possible. David is a brilliant computer and communications scientist. He was solely responsible for cracking the code used by the invaders to corrupt our satellites. If he'd figured out how that code worked, it was probably easy for him to invent a new code that would reverse or corrupt it. Although it seems that the aliens would have anticipated how we'd react and launch our counterattack, it's reasonable to say they couldn't think of everything. It's also implied that all of our current day technology is based on things we've reverse-engineered from the crashed craft. Thus, our computer technology would be based on the alien technology, which suggests that they should be compatible and that data should be able to transfer between systems easily. The most straightforward answer is natural resources. While it would seem more logical to avoid causing mass destruction and fallout across the Earth, the aliens assume that it's better to extinguishmuch life on Earthpossible, decimating cities worldwide to put the human race in disarray and unable to launch an effective counterattack. The resources the aliens yearn to plunder would primarily be fuel sources suchnuclear material. Seeingthe aliens have no regard for human life whatsoever, it would seem unfathomable to predict why they would travel light years across the universe to destroy life rather than research it. A clue to their behavior may lie in comparing how humans themselves treat their surroundings in order to survive. The aliens may have consumed everything available on their own planet, so they now wander the universe for survival rather than curiosity. There's actually a line in the film where President Whitmore explains what the aliens are doing after his telepathy attack. He says that the aliens are like locusts, moving their whole civilization to a planet until every resource is consumed and then they move on to another planet. The aliens could have been fleeing from their planet due to a dying star or some other sort of catastrophic threat to their world. Their mothership was certainly big enough to have carried a whole civilization and could have been seeking out another planet similar to their own or gathering the resources to start elsewhere. In a 1983 TV miniseries, V (1983), a race of reptilian aliens invade and occupy Earth in order to steal all of Earth's water and kidnap the human race to usefood. They arrive on Earth in ships similar to the saucers the aliens in this film use, although they aren'tlarge and they don't come from a mothership out in space. In many sci-fi stories, films, and TV shows, the existence of water on Earth suggests that it's a precious resource among many on Earth, so the aliens in this film could have been after our water. An exception to this would be Signs (2002) where water is actually toxic to the aliens. After David successfully uploads the virus into the mothership's computer, the air strike led by the President begins. It soon becomes apparent, however, that the size of the mothership is too big to inflict widespread damage and that the air force team's supply of missiles is running out. As the mothership prepares to return fire on the Area 51 base, Russell Casse decides to fly his plane directly into the alien weapon. Russ is killed, but the resulting explosion does massive damage to the mothership. Meanwhile, David and Steve have managed to plant the bomb and escape from the mothership within the 30 second delay. A message is immediately sent around the world to alert other nations how to destroy the alien ships hovering over their countries. In the final scene, David and Steve are congratulated by the President and re-united with their families. Dr. Okun (Brent Spiner) was last seen laying motionless on the floor with Major Mitchell (Adam Baldwin) checking his pulse. According to Brent Spiner (when asked at a UK convention in 2008), when Mitchell checks Okun's pulse the line, "He's dead, sir" was filmed but then cut out of the movie. This was done in anticipation of a sequel where they could bring Okun back and he would still be possessed by the alien which would spark another invasion. The DVD Commentary makes it clear that he is in a coma. He fired his Secretary of Defense, and there were no other Cabinet members accompanying him. The Vice President, Speaker of the House and all other Cabinet members were in NORAD, which the aliens destroyed. He could have appointed General Greyacting SecDef, but he would have had to resign his military rank (only civilians can hold an office that is in line for Presidential succession). General Grey is still in uniform when they are up in the air. But in case Whitmore would have been killed, the law indeed specifies that he be succeeded by the Vice President, the Speaker of the House, or a Cabinet member. There are probably no clear regulations nor precedents in case all these persons are unavailable. The remaining authorities would probably have to declare some state of emergency or martial law, which would give local authorities (state governors etc.), the military and institutions suchthe Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) temporary power to form small (local) governments. In the meanwhile, a national government would have to be reassembled, elections arranged, etc. In short, the remaining authorities would have a field day determining the legitimate body in charge, so executive power is most likely shared among several persons and agencies. It's possible or even likely that there would simply be no successor President, whereby a military council assumes leadership or a special dictatorship emerges out of an unlawful coup. The theatrical version runs more than 2 hours. Nevertheless there's also an extended version which contains more than 8 minutes of new footage. Those scenes are only plot scenes for a deeper characterization or to make the story itself more logical. Some of the scenes are quite interesting, some just redundant, but fans can purchase the extended version without seconds thoughts.
